Sales & Revenue
The tasks being handed to models are the ones the job was built on: prospecting, list-building, researching the account, and the first draft of every email. What is left is judgement, and running the machine that now does the rest.
The queue-working half of sales is being automated; the durable half is owning the system that works the queue.
Measured
| Occupation | Measured exposure | Observed automation share |
|---|---|---|
| Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives | 96th percentile | 43% |
| Sales engineers | 92nd percentile | 71% |
| Advertising sales agents | 90th percentile | 32% |
| Sales managers | 54th percentile | 48% — too close to call |
The automation share is measured from observed AI usage, published by Anthropic under CC BY 4.0 — a vendor reporting on its own product, and worth reading as such. It describes how people use AI for this work, not how much of the work AI can do. Exposure percentiles are our composite of the measured sources set out in the methodology.
The shift
The federal statistical agency projects sales occupations to shrink over the next decade, and names AI as the mechanism rather than leaving it to inference. It ranks near the bottom of every occupational group.
Sales and related occupations are projected to shed 297,800 net positions, −2.0%, over 2024–34 — 20th of 22 occupational groups. AI, the article says, “reduces their employment demand”.
Michael J. Rieley and Javier Colato, BLS Monthly Labor Review · 2026-01-08 · verified 2026-09-07
The same article names the specific tasks, and they are the ones that fill an SDR's day rather than an account executive's.
“AI solutions can assist sales representatives with lead prospecting and scoring”, and generative AI “can also be employed to draft emails, create presentations, and develop sales proposals”.
BLS Monthly Labor Review, Rieley and Colato · 2026-01-08 · verified 2026-09-07
The largest sales occupation in the dataset — the row that stands in for the AE and SDR floor — is projected flat, with AI named among the reasons it is not growing.
Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives: 1,571,400 jobs, 0% change 2025–35. Advances in AI and automation “may limit employment growth for sales representatives”.

Quota attainment across the sales-development function is at the lowest point in the ten editions of the industry's standard longitudinal study, while tenure has risen — people are staying in jobs they are missing targets in.
60% of reps at quota, “the lowest on record”; ramp down to 3.0 months, the lowest since 2010; tenure 1.9 years, the highest since the early 2010s.

Among venture-backed B2B software companies, the sales-development function was cut harder than any other sales role — more than account executives, sales engineers or professional services.
36% of companies decreased SDR/BDR headcount and 19% increased it, against 25% decreasing and 28% growing account-executive headcount.
Emergence is the source; SaaStr is the reporter. Venture-backed B2B software, which is where the sales-development model is most concentrated and least representative of sales generally.

The channel
In February 2024 the two largest mailbox providers made bulk sending conditional on authentication and on staying under a published complaint threshold. That is the moment outbound stopped being a personal activity and became a system with a tolerance.
Senders of 5,000+ daily messages to Gmail must authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, honour one-click unsubscribe, and hold spam complaints under 0.3%.
Dated: this is the October 2023 announcement of rules that took effect in February 2024. It is cited as the authoritative statement of the rule, not as current measurement.

Google's own account of what authentication enforcement did to unauthenticated mail is the clearest published measure of how much harder the channel became for anyone not running it properly.
Enforcing authentication saw the number of unauthenticated messages Gmail users receive “plummet by 75%”.
Dated 2023, and Google reporting on its own filtering. There is no independent census of deliverability; every widely-quoted cold-email reply-rate series is published by a sequencing vendor, so none is cited here.

The cost of a conversation, measured rather than estimated, is the argument for owning the system in one line: the ratio of activity to outcome is punishing, and it has not moved in years.
112 median daily activities — 44 calls, 41 emails, 19 LinkedIn touches — produce 4.1 quality conversations per day. The SDR-to-AE ratio has been unchanged at 1:2.4 since 2018.

The founder of an AI-SDR company that advertised on billboards telling firms to stop hiring humans describes what unattended automated outreach actually produced.
“We had extremely bad hallucinations when we first launched”, and on reviewing the early output, “I just cringe in pain”.

Before going further
The venture firm whose data produced the sales-development cuts above also measures whether AI adoption shows up as productivity. It does not yet.
“Across every segment, non-AI companies still generate more revenue per employee.”
Built on operating data — cap tables, software spend, compensation, hiring outcomes — rather than survey sentiment, which makes it harder to dismiss than most contrary evidence here.

At the company most identified with selling AI agents to sales teams, sales is the one function still hiring. Engineering is flat and support was cut; the displaced went into sales.
Asked where headcount is growing, Marc Benioff said Salesforce is expanding “mostly only in 1 area... in sales”.

Two credible sources disagree outright about advertising sales. One projects decline; the other ranks it among the fastest-growing roles in the country. They measure different things, and we are not going to pick the convenient one.
LinkedIn ranks advertising sales specialists 7th and sales executives 9th among the 25 fastest-growing US jobs, while BLS projects advertising sales agents to fall 7% by 2035.
LinkedIn measures growth in jobs started by its members between 2023 and 2025; BLS projects total employment to 2035. Both can be right.

The most prominent AI-SDR company was reported to have lost most of its early customers over the product not working, and its chief executive later stepped down. The category's flagship is a warning, not a proof point.
A former employee: “They absolutely massaged the numbers internally when it came to growth and churn.”
11x disputes this: it says its retention rate is 79%, that it reports contracted ARR with investor knowledge, and that retention improved as the product matured. The churn figures come from former employees, not the company.

The most rigorous experimental evidence on generative AI and selling found real gains — and a range whose bottom end is nothing at all.
Randomised field experiments across seven workflows found effects “ranging from no detectable impact to 16.3%”, running through conversion rather than basket size.
Consumer e-commerce, not B2B outbound. It does not test sales-development work at all, and is cited here because it is the strongest evidence that AI raises sales output, not because it describes this job.

On the record
Salesforce disclosed what its sales agents produced in a quarter. It is the most specific number any vendor has put on autonomous selling — and it is worth doing the division yourself before treating it as a threat.
“Agentforce Sales worked 220 thousand leads autonomously generating $42 million in pipeline” — roughly $191 of pipeline per lead worked.
Pipeline, not revenue, and a vendor's own best-foot-forward figure for its own product. The per-lead arithmetic is ours, from the two numbers as stated.

The clearest vendor claim about agent-written outreach is also, read carefully, a ceiling rather than a breakthrough.
“Prospecting agent is generating response rates on par with human written outreach.” — Yamini Rangan, CEO, HubSpot
An unaudited claim by a company selling the agent. “On par” means not better — the change it implies is in who does the work, not in how well it is done.

The same founder's survey of his audience found that almost nobody had made these tools produce revenue — which is an argument about operators, not about capability.
83% had got nothing from AI SDRs; 3% had generated real revenue. “No one needs to be sending more spam.”

Where the work goes
The destination this product routes sellers toward is a real, named, priced job rather than a title we coined — which also means its market can be checked, and you should check it before believing us.
“an increase of 205% new GTM jobs year-over-year” across 2024–25, median salary $127,500, with Clay the most-cited required tool.
Read this against us, not for us. The base is a few thousand postings; Clay is both the most-demanded tool and the loudest promoter of the title; and a competing growth figure circulated by Clay's own account does not match this one. The skill is worth owning. The title is young enough that betting a career on the words would be premature.

In the same ten-edition study that shows quota attainment at a record low, staffed AI-SDR roles appear for the first time — and are still a rounding error. The destination is early, and saying otherwise would be selling.
2025 was the first year “AI SDRs” appeared as a distinct category, at 1% of respondents.

Runs the outbound engine for one or several companies - sequencing, list quality, deliverability and reply handling - accountable for system throughput rather than personal activity.
Read those skill lists honestly against your own. Someone doing this work today overlaps on the domain knowledge and generally not on the agent tooling, which places them adjacent to the destination rather than already in it. That gap is the work, and naming it is more useful than a score that flatters.
If this is your title
